The CEMETERY KITTENS, where indeed abandoned at a cemetery by someone who obviously thoughtkittens can survive on their own………..by the time a kind person gathered them into a box , they were near death. After a two month recovery process in foster homes, where they were placed in pairs for comfort, all of the kittens recovered and were adopted ( in the same pairs ! ) into wonderful caring homes, never to be abandoned again…
A teeny tiny 8-Week old Chi Puppy found as a stray and taken to a local shelter, to join legions of other Chihuahua’s.( Chi’s dominate the California shelter system ) With a broken femur left untreated for too long, surgery was needed to properly set the bone using a plate, which decreased her changes of adoption or rescue to almost zero. But, Tallulah, was one of the lucky ones. A dedicated shelter volunteer took a photo and networked her, a sponsor came forward to cover the cost of her surgery and an amazing foster Mom gave her a temporary home until she recovered enough to be placed into a good home.
SHARPIE & ELFIE, were held as evidence in a hoarding case, enduring almost 3 years together in a small kennel on a concrete floor without even a single toy or blanket for comfort. After securing their conditional release, along with sixty-eight other dogs, so they could be moved into foster homes, until the case went to trial, this bonded pair were adopted by a wonderful family, who provided Sharpie with the medical treatment she needed and cared for her until she passed away in 2012. Elfie continues to live the good life with her Sheltie sister.
DIXIE, one of two puppies left outside a Kern County shelter in a box. Back yard breeders proliferate in areas of California which have little regulation and are breeder friendly. When puppies reach an age when they become more of a challenge, because they are too active, or get sick due to lack of basic care, and remain unsold, breeders often dump them at local shelters. Pure Breed dogs of all ages are abandoned in staggering numbers. Until animals are no longer treated as ‘merchandise’, to buy and dispose of at will, this behavior will continue.
CINNAMON, was on her last day at a local shelter. A volunteer was taken by her winning smile and took some photos. Dogs always know when they have been saved. Cinnamon jumped into the back of the car, and then into the heart of the man who agreed to give her a foster home for the weekend in order to save her life and ended up adopting her ” She has changed my life in so many ways. “people often get dogs without thinking about their lifestyle and this dog was a prime example of that. A high energy dog who is never exercised, can become destructive, and if nothing else, will bark so much eventually neighbors will complain which often leads to this result.
BLUE & SISSY, were dogs collected by a hoarder in Kern County. Senior dogs suffer the most in the hands of hoarders,
who consider themselves to be animal lovers, but cannot possibly take care of hundreds of animals, socially or medically or in any way ! Both of these dogs needed extensive medical care, including removal of a mouthful of rotten teeth. No animal should be subjected to life outside, when temperatures in the desert area they were held can be extreme, but especially not older animals.
DAISY was about to be impounded at a local shelter when I met her. An adorable one year Shih-Tzu, wearing a diaper.
The woman who was abandoning her claimed she had never had the time to potty-train her. After witnessing her pee blood, our vet determined she had a golf ball size tumor in her bladder which was promptly removed . SMUDGE, rescued the same day, was one of thousands of kittens turned into shelters during the sling birthing season, most of which never make it out alive. One more argument for mandatory spay & neuter !
JINGLE was rescued on Christmas Eve, having been found tied up to a tree in a seedy part of L.A outside a known ‘crack house’. He had been abandoned there weeks earlier. Poor little guy was so depressed he had stopped eating and was so dirty, we had to bathe him three times just to get the worst of the embedded dirt off ! His eyes and ears were blocked by matts of hair and he was riddled with parasites . Underneath it all was an adorable young Shih-Tzu mix and once he was fully vetted, like all of our rescues, ( neutered/ micro-chipped, vaccinated )he was placed in a foster home until adopted into the lap of luxury in Malibu…
